I am just the ocean
I am rough and smooth
Calm and ferocious
Fun and deadly
In control and powerful
yet powerless
I am the largest body of water in the world, and in the solar system
I am home to many living things that work and live together because of each other
You are a body of flesh and bone, but you are mostly made of water too!
Up to 60% of you and 96% of me is H20.
My body of water is 3.5% salt
Your human body is .3% salt
I cover about 70% of the Earth’s surface.
Of the 30% of Earth’s surface that I don’t cover, you take up 90% of that!
There is only 10% of the Earth that isn’t covered by my body of water,
or by the influence of humans like you.
Even though when you look at me you see liquid, I have many extremely large mountains of solid
Earth beneath!
This is the opposite of you.
You are solid, and have mostly liquid on the inside.
Over time I’ve been getting warmer and warmer.
The changes in climate are making my coral die.
As I get warmer, I melt the glaciers to my north and south creating more of me.
When you overheat you sweat to cool down
If you are in the sun too long it will give you blisters and cracked skin, but you will heal
When you put bad things into your body, you don’t stay healthy.
I’m the same way.
Here’s the difference between you and I in this situation...
I don’t put bad things into my body
You Do.
You have a choice of what you put into your body.
I do not.
You have built in filters and functions that keep you alive.
Things both in and out of your control cleanse and heal you
People say I have cleansing properties, but I am becoming more and more toxic as time goes on
My living things are dying
because of the garbage/oil/waste that makes its way to me
I don’t have arms.
I make waves that do their best to push it away and out onto the beach
Did you know these things already?
Did you know 70% of the trash that I make contact with
sinks to the bottom
making it impossible for you or me to clean it out?
By the year 2050 the plastic in my body of water will outweigh all of the fish that call me home.
There is a garbage patch that has accumulated on my surface that is twice the size of Texas.
It would take you between $122-$489 million dollars just to work on cleaning it up for a year.
Even after a year, the task would not be done yet.
It will cost you about $316,000 dollars to stay healthy for your entire life,
but i’ve been alive many lifetimes before and after yours.
